چکیده

Mechanical abrasion is a phenomenon which commonly occurs during the application of polarmolecular electrorheological (PMER) fluids. We experimentally investigate its effect by milling PMER particles for different times. We find that this effect can significantly reduce electrorheological effects of PMER fluids made of butyrolactone-modified TiO2 particles. This reduction results from the reduced interaction between PMER particles due to the loss of polar molecules on the surface of TiO2 particles. It is further revealed that adding proper amount of suitable polar molecules to the host fluid may compensate for the reduction of yield stress which can be about 100% at high electric fields. Saturated orientational polarization of polar molecules in giant electrorheological fluids.

Many researches on polar-molecular electrorheological (PMER) fluids with giant electrorheological effects were reported in recent years. The particles of PMER fluids (PMER particles) are known to have a dielectric core with high dielectric constant and a shell of polar molecules. Our calculation of local electric fields using the finite element approach shows that the local electric field can c...

Particle Shape Dependence of Polar Molecule Dominated Electrorheological Effect

We investigated the relations between the yield stress of polar-molecule dominated electrorheological (PM-ER) fluids and the shape of ellipsoidal particles of the fluids. It is found that, when the short axis of an ellipsoidal particle is along an external electric field while the volume of the particle keeps constant, the shorter of the short axis is, the stronger the attraction between the tw...

Dynamic Stability of Laminated Composite Plates with an External Smart Damper

The dynamic stability of a composite plate with external electrorheological (ER) damper subjected to an axial periodic load is investigated. Electrorheological fluids are a class of smart materials, which exhibit reversible changes in mechanical properties when subjected to an electric field. As a result, the dynamic behavior of the structure is changed. The ER damper is used for suppressing th...

Relation of Lamellar Structure and Shear Stress of Dynamic Pm-er Fluids∗

To understand the dynamic rheological behavior of polar molecular electrorheological (PMER) fluids, the shear stress and viscosity of the colloids are compared with the parameters of their lamellar structures which are obtained simultaneously with the rheological characteristics using an electrorheoscope. The results of the experiments and molecular dynamics simulation indicate that the shear s...

Polar-molecules-driven enhanced colloidal electrostatic interactions and their applications in achieving high active electrorheological materials

We have fabricated a class of colloidal electrorheological (ER) fluids, in which suspended TiO2 particles were synthesized by a sol-gel method and modified by 1,4-butyrolactone molecules with a permanent molecular dipole moment of 4.524 D. Compared with pure TiO2 ER fluids, the quasi-static yield stress of the polarmolecules-modified ER fluid is enhanced as high as 48.1 kPa when subjected to an...
